Three money activities. Make a Dollar -use the basic coins to count up to one dollar (reinforcement activity). The self-correcting feature is useful (drag, drop & check). The images are a bit unclear, so we made a reference key to keep by the computer. Pay Exact Amount uses denominations over one dollar, with a variety of bills and coins. This could be used as an extension activity.

Summary
Students build skills in interpreting images and their understanding of other cultures by examining Unitedstreaming videos of Egypt. Students write articles for a class book on Egypt, using screen shots from the video to support their main idea.

The second-grade students in Frances Koontz's class at Rockledge Elementary School in Bowie, Maryland, are tracing the migration of butterflies with over 6,000 other schools as part of the Journey North project. They calculate the time from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. They measure growth of tulips and milkweed, on which monarch larvae feed, and take daily temperature readings in their garden. They make charts and graphs of their results, write in detail about their findings, and connect with scientists who take questions about the different migrations.
